About District Institute of Education and Training (DIET)

DIETs Background

Envisioned in the National Policy of Education, 1986, District Institutes for Education and Training (DIETs) were created to strengthen elementary education and support the decentralization of education to the district level, under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme on Teacher Education (CSSTE). The District Institutes for Education and Training (DIETs) are district- level Educational Institutes. They help in Coordinating and implementing government policies at district level. They aim to improve the Education System and Competence of teachers through regular training programs including all academic activities.

Role of DIETs

DIETs are meant to provide academic and resource support at the grass-roots level for the success of the various strategies and programmes being undertaken in the areas of elementary and adult education.

1. To strengthen linkages between the DIETs, BRCs, CRCs and JCERT.
2. To serve as an Education Resource Centre for the district in conjunction with BRCs, CRCs.
3. To organize and support teacher professional development and leadership development programs oHead Masters, senior teachers and School Management Committees on a continued basis.
4. To develop district academic plans and monitoring the quality of schools and teaching.
5. To prepare relevant teaching learning materials and Educational Technology inputs to the schools.
6. To develop curriculum materials and evaluation items for the learner’s achievement.
7. To conduct research studies and projects for the special group in the district.

Departments in DIET

Pre-Service Teacher Education:.

1. To organize quality Pre-Service Training for the Primary School system.
2. To provide Child centered approach methodology to the teacher trainees.
3. To provide psychological guidance and counselling services to the teacher trainees.
4. To maintain Science Lab, Psychology Lab, Work Experience Materials, Art Education Articles, Physical Education materials and maintaining a garden.
5. To arrange Internship programme for teacher trainees in primary schools.
6. To arrange field trips related to the curricular areas, which would help the teacher trainees.
7. To promote Yoga, Physical Education and Health Education.
8. To conduct competitions like debate, elocution, seminar, quiz, essay writing, dance, music, songs etc., in order to strength co- curricular activities

In-service programme, Field Interaction, Innovation & Co-ordination:.

1. To assist educational authorities in planning and coordinating in-service education programs throughout the district.
2. To identify training needs of teachers in the distric.
3. To organize in-service training programs to be held in and outside the DIET.
4. To serve as the nodal branch for organizing service education programs for teachers and HMs.
5. To evaluate and monitor the quality and efficacy of in-service programs and strive for their continuous improvement.
6. To act as the nodal branch for all action research and field interactions activities.
7. To co-ordinate in-house action research activities and disseminate its results.

District Resource Unit:

1. To provide instructional inputs into core areas and individual subjects
2. To undertake action research in all areas

Curriculum Material Development and Evaluation:

1. To adapt existing curricular units and develop new locally relevant units for the district in various subjects.
2. To develop teaching – learning materials for general and locally developed curricular units.
3. To develop evaluation tools and techniques for diagnostic testing, remedial programs and talent identification procedures
4. To help educational authorities and schools in implementing a reliable and valid system of learner evaluation

Educational Technology:

1. To develop simple, effective and low-cost teaching aids for elementary education
2. To conduct in-service programs for teachers in the area of ET
3. oTo provide ET related inputs into all programs/activities of pre-service and in-service branch

Work Experience:

1. To identify locally relevant Work Experience areas and develop sample curricular units, Teaching Learning Materials and Low-cost teaching aids
2. To help educational authorities and schools in planned introduction of Work Experience activities
3. To conduct appropriate in-service programs for teachers in the areas of Work Experience
4. To provide Work Experience related inputs into all other programs and activities of the institute
5. To organize activities for cleanliness, upkeep and development of the campus and for basic maintenance of furniture and other properties
6. To promote work-related hobbies among teacher trainees

Planning & Management:

1. To maintain an appropriate data-base for the district
2. To study the effects of various interventions of the state
3. To conduct studies in relation to enrolment, retention and regularity of attendance of children and adult learners
4. To develop norms, criteria and techniques for evaluation of institutions
5. To conduct appropriate programs for HMs, block level educational functionaries in P&M

Role of DIETs in present Scenario:

1. To monitor and guide the conduct of teacher training in the BRCs and CRCs
2. To conduct specialized trainings such as leadership, evaluation & assessment, ICT, inclusive education, Gender sensitization, etc.
3. Conduct training for Headmasters of the schools
4. Conduct training for secondary/higher secondary teachers.
5. Facilitate in resourcing material for subject specific training at BRC/CRC level (using available resources from online platforms such as E-pathshala and SWAYAM.
6. To mentor schools and take up innovations and action research
7. To coordinate between BRCs/CRCs and NGOs in the district who are contributing in the area of teacher training.
8. BRCs and CRCs work under DIETs supervision for In-service teacher training
